My Heritage
By ethnicity i am a member of the Qashqai ethnic group. The Qashqai are a Turkic-speaking nomadic ethnic group primarily residing in southwestern Iran, notably within the Fars province and the Zagros Mountains region. Historically, they have been recognised for their pastoral nomadic lifestyle, migrating seasonally between summer highland pastures and winter lowland areas. However due to socioeconomic changes over the past generations the majority have migrated to major cities such as Shiraz. Encyclopedia.com iranontrip.ir

Language and Culture
The Qashqai people speak the Qashqai language, a subgroup of the Oghuz branch of Turkic languages, and are typically bilingual, also fluent in Farsi (the national language of Iran ). Their cultural identity is deeply rooted in tribal affiliations, with a confederation structure comprising various tribes and sub-tribes. Wikipédia, l’encyclopédie libre
Traditional Lifestyle
Traditionally, the Qashqai engaged in pastoral nomadism, herding sheep and goats across seasonal pastures. This migratory practice was central to their economic and social systems. In recent decades, however, many Qashqai have transitioned to a more sedentary lifestyle, settling in urban and rural areas, though a small percentage continue their nomadic practices. icmagazine.org

Artisanal Crafts
The Qashqai are renowned for their intricate weaving, particularly their carpets and kilims, which are celebrated for their vibrant colors and geometric patterns. These textiles are not only functional but also serve as a medium for artistic expression, cultural storytelling and historic preservation. icmagazine.org

Contemporary Challenges
Modernisation and political changes have posed challenges to the Qashqai’s traditional way of life. Land reforms and sedentarisation policies have impacted their nomadic practices. Despite these challenges, the Qashqai continue to preserve their cultural heritage through language, crafts, and community structures whilst living in an urban setting.
